The foundational color-matching bubble shooter.

In the early 2000s, the focus of MAME development was rapidly shifting. The project was moving beyond simply getting 1980s classics like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong to run, and was beginning to tackle the much more complex hardware of mid-to-late 1990s arcade boards. This was a transitional period. Emulation accuracy was still the primary goal, but the sheer processing power required to emulate newer 3D systems was beyond most consumer computers of the day. MAME 0.78 arrived as a balance—it had matured enough to emulate a vast library of 2D games with excellent accuracy, yet predates the steep hardware demands required for later versions that focused on more complex 3D hardware.
