The actors in City of God were largely non-professional performers, many of whom were actual residents of Rio's favelas. Their raw, authentic performances, delivered in their native Portuguese, are integral to the film's power. Dubbing over their voices with English ones, no matter how skilled the voice actors, would strip the film of a core part of its soul. The stilted mouth movements and mismatched vocal inflections can create a sense of "cheapness," fundamentally altering the director's intended artistic vision.
Modern streaming platforms like Netflix, Paramount+, or Amazon Prime Video almost exclusively host the film in its original Brazilian Portuguese audio track with English subtitles.
