The story follows Tita de la Garza, the youngest daughter in a family living on a ranch near the Texas-Mexico border. Bound by a family tradition that forbids her from marrying so she can care for her mother until her death, Tita falls in love with Pedro Muzquiz. When Pedro marries her older sister, Rosaura, to stay close to Tita, the young chef channels her repressed emotions—joy, sorrow, rage, and lust—into the food she prepares. The dishes she cooks cause supernatural effects on those who eat them, from weeping uncontrollably to burning with passionate fire.
