Genesis's journey began in 1967 when five students at Charterhouse School in Surrey, England formed the band. The original lineup consisted of Peter Gabriel (vocals), Anthony Phillips (guitar), Tony Banks (keyboards), Mike Rutherford (bass), and Chris Sly (drums). Their early sound was characterized by psychedelic rock and folk influences, which can be heard in their debut album, (1969). Although not a commercial success, this album laid the foundation for the band's future experimental approach.
