The history of art is saturated with images of the female nude created by and for the male gaze, a concept notably theorized by Laura Mulvey in her 1975 essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema". This theory describes how, in a world ordered by sexual imbalance, women were often presented as passive objects of desire, created for the pleasure of an active male viewer. However, a significant evolution in photographic practice has been the rise of the female gaze, which has helped dismantle these old dynamics. Female photographers have not only gained access to this artistic practice, which was historically forbidden to them, but they have also profoundly redefined its codes and objectives.
