The traditional Albanian customary law, known as the Kanun , placed significant emphasis on blood relations. The Kanun strictly prohibited marriages within the bloodline up to the seventh generation, a rule that was designed to preserve the health and social order of the clan. This prohibition, however, did not diminish the social closeness of cousins; rather, it reinforced the importance of the extended family unit while discouraging romantic entanglement within it.
